However both took it as a compliment, not an insult. I'm sure you have seen pictures of both those men being real men on their respective ranches clearing down trees and brush.
As with anything time has diluted the meaning of the words. Most people think of cowboys as they see them on TV in the bull riding or rodeos and old westerns. Working Cowboys don't see them as cowboys but as people who just wear the clothes of a cowboy. Many of your entertainment cowboys.....professional bull riders, professional rodeo cowboys.....do not even come from rural backgrounds let along from cattle ranching backgrounds. Lots of people dress like cowboys because they like the way they look but couldn't find a Angus bull in a flock of sheep. Many buy ranches once they make their money but they get real ranch hands to run them. Not ALL entertainment cowboys are that way. Some grew up on ranches and just drifted into the rodeo world to make money and for the excitement. The term Cowboy is used for both male and female riders. Cowgirl is never used by real cattlemen/women of either sex to describe someone doing the job of cowboying.
